Walking into a little store located at the Madison Park Business Center is a bit like walking into a shop in Brooklyn, New York. The Source is a one-stop holistic shop with everything from organic products to vintage clothing and leather goods.
So, what’s the source of The Source?
Federico Villaseñor and Kelsey Richardson Hayes came up with the idea in the fall of 2023. Villaseñor said the Madison Park location was a no-brainer, and they secured it immediately.
“Yes, this is the first brick-and-mortar store for both of us. Although we had previous small businesses, we always dreamed of having a retail shop one day.”
Villaseñor, originally from Mexico City, came to Shreveport in 2013, and Hayes came in 2018 from Texas. Both said they opened The Source with great support from family and friends.
“Despite being transplants, we feel connected to the Shreveport community,” Villaseñor said. “Making Shreveport and the Highland area our home, we wanted to share our passions with our new hometown.”
He said overcoming self-doubt was their biggest challenge. They initially planned to open before Christmas 2023 but had to adjust the timeline to accommodate the buildout process.
“We have received tremendous support from the community, with many people exploring and shopping at our store,” he said. “Meeting individuals who share our passion for heirloom-quality leather goods and sustainability has been truly rewarding.”
He said men’s wares and accessories have been popular with customers. Villaseñor makes the leather goods found in the store by hand, including front-pocket wallets and handmade belts.
One of the store’s more unique offerings is the refillery.
“Our refillery features all-natural and eco-friendly products safe for your home, body, children, and pets,” he said. “We prioritize products that we have personally tested and used in our own home.”
In addition to the storefront, The Source participates in makers fairs and other local markets.
“We actively collaborate with various local businesses and makers in town,” Villaseñor said. “Our participation in local markets has been successful and rewarding.”
As The Source seeks to grow, it is building its online store. Villaseñor said customers can follow the story at @thesource_la on Instagram for the latest news and updates.
“Our goal is to expand The Source and continue building relationships within the Shreveport community,” Villaseñor said. “We aim to educate our community about the significance of handmade goods and sustainability.”
