SHREVEPORT, La. — If you’ve ever known someone who couldn’t afford a lawyer: this fund is for them.
Southern University Law Center has received an $800,000 gift from the Louisiana Bar Foundation — funding that will go straight to helping low-income Louisiana families get free legal help through the university’s Clinical Law Program.
The grant, announced Monday at the Southern University Board of Supervisors meeting in Baton Rouge, will fund new legal fellowships, client services, and an indigent client fund designed to close Louisiana’s growing “justice gap,” which is basically the distance between those who need a lawyer and those who can pay for one.
