Songbook South, a nonprofit organization founded in 2017, is dedicated to providing pre-professional training and performance opportunities to young musicians in Shreveport. Its mission is to nurture and develop young talent, primarily vocalists, offering comprehensive musical education through hands-on piano training, songwriting workshops and instrumental sessions.
Network of mentors
The organization brings in top clinicians from musical hubs like New York, Los Angeles and Nashville. These mentors, who are compensated for their time and expertise, play a crucial role in enhancing students’ skills and providing invaluable networking opportunities. The costs for these programs can reach up to $10,000 for a weekend event, covering fees, travel, accommodation, and other expenses.
Community and financial support
Donations from local foundations and businesses, including Yokem Toyota, the John Sluck and Anita Sluck Foundation and the Touchstone Fund, form the financial backbone for Songbook South. These contributions are instrumental in sustaining and expanding the organization’s programs, allowing them to offer unique performance experiences throughout the year. According to Jennifer Dowd, founder, Songbook South is still looking for corporate sponsors and individual donors.

Year-round engagement and experiences
Beyond annual events, Songbook South provides continuous support to its students. During the pandemic, students created their first music video in downtown Shreveport, a project that, despite its high cost and time requirement, offered students real-world experience and exposure.
Expanding educational opportunities
Songbook South is focused on increasing its footprint by introducing more group and private classes for adults, fostering broader community engagement and knowledge transfer from experienced mentors. It also wants to expand its board and partnerships, welcoming individuals passionate about the mission.
The power of music education
Music education has transformative power, enhancing confidence, teamwork, discipline and mental focus. Studies indicate that music study improves cognitive and non-cognitive skills more effectively than other activities, such as sports, theater or dance.

Economic and cultural impact
The music industry is growing significantly, and Songbook South’s representative is optimistic about Shreveport’s potential to capitalize on this growth. Drawing parallels to the historical significance of the Louisiana Hayride, they envision Shreveport as a thriving hub for entertainment.

Its dedication to nurturing young talent and fostering a supportive environment for music education is set to create lasting positive impacts on the community.
Empowering young musicians
A flagship event is the annual Songbook South High School Vocal Competition and Vocal Intensive, collectively known as the Inspiration Weekend. This event, featuring renowned clinicians like jazz musician Laurel Massé and Broadway accompanist Jeffrey Saver, is based on the Great American Songbook and provides intensive training and performance opportunities.

Notable alumni include Caleb Freeman, performing at the Sight & Sound Theatre in Branson, and Nia Savoy, who has performed with Bernadette Peters at the Ford’s Theatre gala, in addition to being the Business Manager for Washington DC Imagination Stage and an Associate Artist for Ford’s Theater.
