In the heart of Shreveport, Louisiana, an organization is sowing the seeds of community involvement, environmental stewardship and sustainable living.
Shreveport Green, a non-profit dedicated to fostering a healthy, sustainable and economically vibrant community, is making a significant impact through its Community Gardens initiative.
Nestled at its Spragg Street location, Shreveport Green’s flagship community garden thrives with lush vegetation and brims with volunteer opportunities.
This green oasis is not the organization’s sole horticultural endeavor. Shreveport Green also has community gardens at Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation (SPAR) facilities and schools throughout the city, spreading its mission of environmental consciousness far and wide.
Shanetta Brown, the assistant director of Shreveport Green, is at the helm, steering toward a greener, more sustainable future. She invites anyone eager to contribute to the creation of safe and beautiful spaces within the city to volunteer. Brown believes in the power of a smile and provides willing workers with a comprehensive introduction to hydroponic farming, a pair of sturdy work gloves and sharp pruning shears.
The only requirement to volunteer at Shreveport Green is the ability to work with a smile. Brown encourages volunteers to come prepared with sunscreen and a hat to protect against the Louisiana sun. If you’re interested in joining this green movement, you can reach out to Brown via email at sbrown@shreveportgreen.org.
For those seeking a more structured commitment to environmental causes, Shreveport Green also offers paid positions through ShreveCorps, the local branch of the AmeriCorps program.
