Caddo Parish Public Schools Celebrates Growth and Looks Ahead with Optimism

SHREVEPORT, LA — With national accolades and a record-breaking state performance rating, Caddo Parish Public Schools (CPSB) has many reasons to celebrate. Under the leadership of new superintendent Keith Burton, the district has earned a ‘B’ in the state accountability system—the highest rating in its history—and is now setting its sights even higher.

Burton recently spoke with Shrevepossible about the district’s progress, academic milestones, and his vision for the future of public education in Caddo Parish.

As Caddo Parish celebrates its highest ranking in the history of the state’s accountability system, what factors do you believe facilitated this improvement? What will CPSB do to continue moving toward the coveted A ranking?

Burton described the ‘B’ rating as a milestone built on a collective effort from teachers, students, families, and the broader community. He credits Caddo’s passionate educators and committed students as central to the district’s success.

Looking ahead, Burton said the district will focus on aligning resources, expanding early childhood education, and providing stronger instructional support in literacy and numeracy. The district will also strengthen STEM and Career & Technical Education (CTE) pathways and implement data-driven interventions.

“Achieving an ‘A’ ranking will require a community-wide effort, and we are committed to fostering partnerships to meet that goal,” Burton emphasized.

With 14 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists coming from Caddo, what qualities do you believe these students share, and what school/educator supports are needed to foster such scholarly achievement?

Burton praised the academic excellence of the 14 National Merit semifinalists, noting their shared traits of curiosity, perseverance, and a drive to succeed. While celebrating those students, he emphasized that Caddo’s strength lies in its diversity of talent—from artists to athletes and problem-solvers.

To support all students, the district is expanding access to mentorships, dual enrollment, apprenticeships, and advanced coursework. The goal is to offer differentiated learning experiences that meet students where they are and give every child the tools to succeed.

“We’re shaping a brighter future by ensuring every student, regardless of background, has the opportunity to thrive,” he said.

Caddo Parish Magnet High School is proving to be an educational powerhouse. In your opinion, what qualities create a successful school?

According to Burton, success stems from schools that foster high expectations, engage student interests, and build strong community partnerships. He praised educators across the district, from Keithville to Vivian, for their dedication to increasing student achievement.

He emphasized the importance of systemic support—ensuring schools have the leadership, resources, and programs like arts integration, STEM, and CTE to drive success.

“Strong schools are built on collaboration between educators, students, families, and partners who share a vision of excellence,” Burton said.

Burton’s vision centers on opportunities, innovation, and collaboration. Through conversations with stakeholders, he has identified three top priorities:

1. Strengthening Leadership and Support: Ensuring each school is equipped to succeed.
2. Expanding Choice for Families: Initiatives like the new K-8 Broadmoor STEM Academy and J.S. Clark Academy will offer hands-on learning in STEM and career exploration.
3. Enhancing School Support Systems: Addressing challenges like truancy and achievement gaps with timely, data-driven solutions.

Community support will be vital. Burton called on families, local businesses, and organizations to mentor students, advocate for schools, and partner with the district.

“With your support, we can make sure every child reaches their full potential,” he said.

Burton highlighted the district’s financial stewardship, which has led to an upgraded bond outlook from Standard & Poor’s and stronger reserves. These savings allow for reinvestment in classroom learning and student-focused programs.

Programs like Early College, created in partnership with the Cyber Innovation Center, are giving students an early advantage. One standout story: David Adger II, a graduate from Booker T. Washington High School who left with a high school diploma and two associate degrees – without student debt.

“David’s story shows the real impact of our programs. This is why we invest in early college, advanced coursework, and CTE—to open doors for students and families,” said Burton.

As Caddo Parish Public Schools builds on its historic momentum, Superintendent Burton is focused on sustaining academic growth, expanding opportunities, and reinforcing a culture of excellence across every campus in the district.

“We’re proud of where we are,” he said, “but even more passionate about where we’re going.”
